Heidi’s Happiness
Maybe happiness is this: not feeling like you should be elsewhere,
doing something else, being someone else.
Isaac Asimov
Because of the psychological phenomenon of “emotional contagion”, we “catch” emotions from other people. Even strangers catch emotions from one another, after the most fleeting contact and people can catch emotions through a phone conversation, a person’s silent presence, or even a glance at a picture of a happy or angry face. The more emotionally expressive people are, the more infectious their emotions.
It’s helpful to be aware of how someone’s moods might be lifting you up or dragging you down–or how you might be affecting others.
When a client comes in and we talk about what is going on in their life, many times I find that energy has gotten “attached” to them and they aren’t aware of it. They are feeling super stressed and don’t really know why. One example I give them is when they are feeling pretty good and someone walks by or comes into their “space”. When that person leaves, they find themselves feeling grumpy or just irritated. This person wouldn’t even have to have talked to them. This is energy getting attached. You don’t MEAN to get it on you, but it just does.
Another example is when you are feeling pretty good and someone comes to you and touches you. They may say something to you and then walk away. I actually had a manager that would come to my cubicle, touch my shoulder (I never understood why she needed to touch me), say something to me and then walk away. What she was doing (unknowingly) was dumping her crappy energy and grabbing my positive energy. I figured it out because I felt “wonky” after she left thus disrupting my energy.
One suggestion is to “brush off” the energy. While you probably can’t see the energy, brushing the area can really help. A full body energy brushing starts at the top of your head and basically you are using your hand to brush down your body thereby removing any energy that may have gotten attached to you. Give it a try, you just might feel a bit better!
