I’m pausing and taking time to nurture, recenter and balance myself. Originally I wasn’t going to send an email today however, a client recently gave me “The Promise of a New Day” book and today’s reading resonated, so I’m sharing it with you!

Some of us buy expensive toys on impulse, tire of them quickly and let ourselves feel hopeless and inadequate because the impulsive wish was a shallow one. To ease our pain, we buy new toys – and so it goes.

Each new thing we acquire means new responsibilities: insurance policies, computer software, installment payments, safe deposit boxes. Deadlines and taxes oppress us; we dream of “getting away from it all.”

At some point, we chose everything in our lives. If we wish, we can choose to do without it. When we feel suffocated by our possessions and obligations, it’s good to clear our minds and think about what we really want. Many of us don’t think about our values consciously until they become a source of pain.

We’d be kinder to ourselves if we were fully aware of our values when we make choices in our lives. Are we choosing things as a shortcut to happiness–or a substitute for it? If we feel an emptiness that we’ve tried to fill with things, we’d do better to tend our spirits.

Let me learn to trust myself;
then I know I’ll like what what I do.
